The cabin was darling with lots of knotty pine. Super clean. No musty old smell which could happen with an old cabin. The grounds were well maintained as well. The Spruce cabin faces the street on one side and has a view of the lake on the other side. The screened-in porch was where we spent lots of evenings enjoying food cooked over the fire and playing games.
This is a group of cabins and RV spots at the end of a street in a small town. overlookIng a large field whereRvs and tents can camp, with Pine Mountain Lake just beyond. There’s a terrific play structure for the kids and lots of recreational opportunity with a basketball hoop, paddle boats, kayaks, paddle boards, and a canoe. A few life jackets are available if you didn’t bring your own, and some fishing poles available as well. Each cabin gets its own fish cleaning locker down by the lake. This resort seems to be particularly suited to fishing, but there's a little sandy beach and there are weed reduction improvements in progress. A couple of long docks provide lots of space to tie up your boat.
Backus is pretty small, but ten minutes up the road in Hackensack there’s a delightful ice cream shop called the Big Dipper. A block to the west is a charming playground with a little model wooden play train to explore and an old style climbing gym and an old fashioned merry-go-round among other fun things. Our toddler particularly loved the huge statue of Lucette, Paul Bunyan’s sweetheart, standing next to a tiny library on the beach. This is a nice swimming beach. There are a couple of piers you can walk out on and watch the fish. It appears that in a non-covid year there’s a cute block of shops that vacationers would love. Closed this year.
The beds are small (full size), so you can figure a couple of kids or one adult per bed. The futon was very easy to set up. The rocking chair was a nice surprise. The street light was kind of bright for the sleeper on the futon but the bedrooms were nice and dark if the curtain door was closed. The kitchen is well equipped and clean. The window AC works well as long as the curtains to the bedrooms stay open. Plus the bedrooms had ceiling fans which I consider a great plus.
This is not an isolated cabin in the middle of nowhere. It's a nice getaway to a small town with access to a lake and close to a lot of other lakes and little towns.Nearby Godfreys grocery/hardware supplies everything from special dietary needs to roofing or sporting goods
