The Time Machine at Bass Harbor
My wife and I really enjoyed our stay in this quaint cottage. Willow, our American Dirus dog, did too.
As soon as I exited my car next to the cottage, I drew in a deep breath of the intoxicating salt air. It was just after sunset. The solar-powered motion-activated downlights led us to the front door. That was very much appreciated.
The secret door code worked, and we opened the door to find a large open room that included the living, dining, and kitchen areas.
The enormous picture window that looked directly south down Bass Harbor to the Atlantic Ocean was spectacular. Within seconds, I felt like I was back home in central New Hampshire inside one of the old summer camps that still can be found on many of the lakes. You must rent this cottage if you've ever wanted to stay in a period camp.
The bedrooms were tiny and the beds took up nearly 90 percent of the floor space. But that's okay, as you're just going to sleep there, right? Why waste valuable space?
I think my most enjoyable aspect was playing human Tetris in the bathroom. The more you can contort your body, the more you're going to enjoy both the shower and getting to the toilet. The depression in the linoleum floor was a period old-camp touch. Seriously, I enjoyed having my foot drop down a half inch.
My wife grew up spending weekends on a boat. She said walking across the big room rekindled memories of being on the Ohio River on a windy day. Yes, the cottage is out of level. Four inches alone in the kitchen.
