My wife and I, along with our adult children, were visiting Amsterdam as part of a longer trip to the UK.
Our goal was to be out of the main touristy areas but with easy access to them. Captain's House was a great location in that way. It has a very 'neighborhoody' feel, yet it's a short walk from the Nemo Museum, Nieuwmarkt, the Red Light District, and the Central Station, which will get you anywhere you need to go in the city.
Arjen, our host, went above and beyond to make us feel at home. He took the time to familiarize us with the neighborhood, pointing out the best places to dine, unwind, and shop for groceries, while also sharing some interesting historical tidbits. His guidance was invaluable and quickly made us feel like locals.
The apartment was well-equipped and comfortable. We didn't cook, but it looked like he had everything you would need if you wanted to - there were just too many great restaurants to choose from!
The only cons:
The noise on the street late at night when the bar around the corner closes. (Only the front room and it's better if the windows and shutters are closed)
Very steep and narrow steps up (though that's most homes in Amsterdam, from what I've learned.)
We absolutely would stay here again!
