A beautiful and relaxing home
We really enjoyed our time at this home! It is a well maintained home and property and suited our family of four perfectly! Between the pool over looking the turtle filled ocean and the hot tub my girl’s throughly enjoyed their time while my husband and I could relax to the quiet in the waves from the ocean. We will definitely be back!

Beautiful view
This home has a million dollar view with the pool oceanfront. You can see the neighboring homes but it’s not a noisy neighborhood at all. The home has most all the necessities you’d need for your stay. Beds were comfortable and showers were very good. There is the extra guest house where my 15 and 9 year old stayed and they thought it was great to get their own space. It’s quite a way from Hilo but the view and neighborhood is worth it.

Great stay!
We had a really great stay here! The view is even better than the pictures, we had everything we needed, and had no troubles with the check-in process. We would definitely stay here again if we ever get back to this island!

We'll Be Back
This is our second stay, but certainly not our last. We have some very specific "wants" for our Hawaiian holiday. Single story, private pool, oceanfront, doesn't cost us an arm and a leg...and Hilo Shangri La provides all of this. It is a funky, Hawaiian beach house and we love it. Due to airline schedule changes we had to make numerous changes to our reservation and every interaction was positive and fun.

Stunning
Our stay at Hilo Shangrila was everything we were hoping for and then some. The view out back is one that never gets old, and it left us awe-struck every day. Communication was thorough and timely. The home itself was extremely clean and as listed. The pool and hot tub combination was also great and both extremely clean. If you're looking for a peaceful slice of paradise, you won't be disappointed. While I'm not sure if our travels will bring us back to Hilo, I couldn't imagine staying anywhere else after our experience here - we're still talking about it even after returning home! Many thanks for making this available for our family to enjoy as a very memorable experience.

Beautiful setting but remote
The house is on an amazing ocean front lot and we loved spending time by the pool. At the end of the street is an amazing area where the water meets the rocks. The neighbors on either side have a lot of deferred maintenance on their properties so you have to be able to line of put blinders on and look straight out to the rocks and ocean. It is quite a drive from the airport so be prepared and stop for groceries as you drive through Hilo. It’s a long way back.

Quiet, peaceful surroundings. Outstanding views. Wonderful house with all the amenities. Pool next to the ocean is perfect. Great kitchen and a very relaxing house. Neighborhood is very quiet and safe. Worth every penny! One of the best houses we have rented. Highly recommended!! Five stars!!

Amazing and Magical
This place has a feel of old Hawaii- a drop dead gorgeous piece of property. You look out the windows and see the pool and beyond it is the Pacific Ocean with its nonstop waves. We ate outside at the patio table every evening. I swam in the pool once or twice a day. The house is architecturally interesting and so lovely. It had everything we needed. I am totally flummoxed by the negative review. This place is wonderful. It makes the condo we are now in on the other side of the Big Island disappointing. Thank-you so much.

This house was everything we could need while on the Hilo side of Hawaii. We have stayed before COVID and house was down the street from here, but not near as nice. Would stay again in a heartbeat! Easy to find in the dark and comfortable for everyone with the guest house included.

Unique private pool
Anyone who books this house is booking it for the pool and view, and this aspect of the house did not disappoint! The private pool with the expansive view is a treat. There are 4 loungers. We had very unfortunate weather, but the hot tub helped because we would just into the pool and then warm up in the hot tub. There are no lights in the pool for night time. The house itself is very functional. It is old but cozy and the Hawaiian decor gives it a vacay vibe. The location of the house is quite far from any sort of action.. but that is just being on the Hilo side of the island. We had one major issue with this rental- the beds. The ‘mattresses’ are so so bad. They (all 3) are so soft. They reminded us of blow up air mattresses you use camping where you sink 1/2 a foot into the ‘bed’, and each night your back gets more and more sore. We couldn’t understand why a rental would choose SUCH a soft mattress? Why not something more neural. It’s 3 days later and my husband and I are still talking each day about how sore our backs are, and we are in our mid 30s. Those are the worst beds of any rental I’ve ever experienced.

Paradise
We absolutely loved our stay at Hilo ShangriLa. Everything was as described. The home is very comfortable and well stocked. The weather was cooler and rainy for part of our stay, so we didn't make a lot of use of the pool, but the hot tub was perfect. Watching the waves by the pool was incredible. We saw several sea turtles riding the waves and the sunrises/sunsets are breathtaking. Communication was excellent. We saw some amazing things on the island, but justsitting on the patio watching the waves was a highlight of our vacation. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again if we had the opportunity to return.

Awesome vacation and engagement at the pool
The Hilo Shangrila is an amazing vacation rental. The house is located in a quiet neighbourhood about a 30 minutes drive from Hilo. Everything was very clean and well maintained. The labelling of light switches and kitchen cupboards made it very easy to find the right one. The property manager was very helpful and quick to respond with questions or problems we had. The waterfront pool combined with the ocean view was fantastic. From the pool we could observe turtles in the ocean coming up for air. Only the bedrooms are equipped with AC but the rest of the rooms have ceiling fans. I will always remember this place, because I got engaged here.

Gorgeous location and property
Everything was as-advertised and the ocean front views were amazing! Check in was easy and the house was easy to navigate. The hot tub got alot of use! The only negative was that the pool light didn’t work, so effectively made the pool useless after sunset. Other than that, great experience!

We have not had guests mention that the lack of lights impacted their use of the pool. Fixing them would put the pool out of commission for some time, and nobody wants that. The pool works just the same without the lights - and it's all the better for an after-dark skinny dip ;-) We hope you'll keep us in mind if your travels bring you back to Puna! House of Aloha !
If your objective is to "get away from it all" in comfort and Aloha, this is your place on the Big Island. The detail of the house is on another level: the personal artifacts and house arrangement was extremely thoughtful and complete: you were sharing someone's personal home. The cleanliness was also "on another level"; everything was nicely organized and labeled......everything you think you might need is there (and more !). Complete information on hand: a very detailed and well orgnaized binder offering tons of information in regards to places to dine, things to do etc..

Beautiful Ocean Views
Great outdoor spaces for swimming and relaxing. Lots of pool toys. Pool and hot tub were clean. Had all of the basic items you would need. Room AC was nice. Clean bedrooms and bathrooms. Ceiling fans and door and windows are a must. Best when there was a breeze. Small adjacent apartment was great for my parents. About 20 min. away from a store and gas. Propane grill was nicely clean and we used it every night. There were turtles just off shore day and night you could watch. The kids loved this!

Peace and Quiet
We have been to the Big Island several times and most times spent our time on the Kona side. Last year we decided to try the "other side" of the island. We found Hilo Shangrila this year and we know that we have found our new holiday home. We want a quiet place where we can float in the pool and just enjoy the sea and this home meets both of those wishes. We left so relaxed and renewed and are already planning our next year's trip. Salt Water Vacations was so easy to deal with and Shawna texted us the first night after our arrival to make sure we were settled in and to find out if we had any questions. The air conditioner in the second bedroom is very loud, so ear plugs are definitely recommended.

A slice of heaven!
We loved our stay here. There was room to spread out inside but we spent almost all of our time together outside enjoying the beautiful view from the lanai, hot tub and pool. When you stand at the edge of the pool and look into the ocean you can see turtles in the waves. It was magical. Parking was easy, kitchen was well stocked. Air conditioners in the rooms were hardly needed because the ocean breeze kept the house nice and cool. This is a beautiful property with a beautiful view and I hope we can visit again.

The ocean views from the property are amazing. We enjoyed the hot tub and pool as well. The property is a bit dated but clean and comfortable. Sights and sounds that take your breath away
We arrived late in the evening and the house was ready to go. At first we did not realize the studio was included so it was a huge bonus. Waking up and going to bed with the waves crashing was the highlight for us. The view of the ocean was gorgeous each day. The area is quiet, and only the occasional tourist walking the cliffs. The pool was clean and large enough for multiple people. The hot tub was great. Our family loved the ombiance of the house. It helped us to truly enjoy our stay. We would stay here again, and it is worth the rent. Mahalo.

Super relaxing
We found the property charming - clearly an older home but it gave it Hawaii charm. Manager super responsive - one fan wasn't working and once we reported it, friendly repair people were there in hours to replace it with new. Kitchen was well stocked with cups, plates etc. We enjoyed walking the quiet road along the ocean. The ocean is not accessible for swimming or beach combing as it has rough cliff, but we knew that from the listing. The waves were wonderful to watch from the patio. We would stay there again.

A little piece of paradise!
This rental home was absolutely amazing! It was everything we expected and more. The house was impressively clean and supplied everything we needed for a little staycation! All cooking supplies, utensils, BBQ grill, a rice cooker, blender, pots/pans, and an ice machine! The little ‘ohana suite was a bonus that we did not expect and we could’ve probably had 2 more people stay with us because of that extra bathroom and studio! It was very stunning. The pool, lānai, and amazing ocean view is what makes this house spectacular! We saw honu swimming in the morning off the ocean waves, the beautiful sunrise was breathtaking, and the pool was clean and so comfortable to swim in. The jacuzzi was an added perk for the chillier evenings or when it gets overcast. We loved this house. The only thing is I wish they would’ve allowed us 3-5 guests per day being that we wanted to invite a few friends over, but the strict no party rule made it so we couldn’t do so. Aside from that, We plan to go back!!!!

Amazing Hideaway on an Amazing Island
This property was insane, and really was the highlight of our stay. Most people say the accommodations on a Hawaii vacation aren’t worth it because you “only sleep there,” but we found ourselves budgeting extra time to enjoy the house. Everything was absolutely perfect - book here, you won’t regret it!

Quiet oasis by the sea
This home was a the perfect place to launch exploration of the East side of the Big Island. So much to do near by, and do not miss the local farmer's/craft Saturday market. The home gets good breezes, but the AC in the bedrooms were nice for sleeping. There was a lot of weather during our week long stay, but the rains were usually brief and warm. Swimming in the pool with the waves crashing on the rocks below was awesome. We would absolutely stay at this house again.

I’ve always wanted to stay on the Hilo side. We lucked into this last minute rental for a three night stay. Incredible location, crashing waves with unlimited turtle sitings and whale viewing. warm solar-heated pool in February, hot tub, well-equipped kitchen., comfy beds. Beautifully Hawaiian decor. Minor suggestions. Some maintenance needed—top shelf of dishwasher broken, screen door to backyard repeatedly fell, welcome letter needs updating—some inaccurate info. Would absolutely recommend and stay her on our next visit. Hilo gets a bad weather AP. The wa some rain most days but often dry and sunny. Loved this place and love the area.

Wonderful home on the Hilo side of the Big Island
Fantastic location right on the ocean. Beautiful big, heated swimming pool and hot tub. Swimming at night under the stars and moon, priceless! Shawna greeted us and went over everything so that made for a very smooth and helpful check in. Lovely large home with everything you need all decorated with Hawaiian themes. Makes for a very tropical stay. They provide you with everything you need for the kitchen ( ie condiments, foil wrap, soap, sponges dish towels etc.)and bathroom, including soaps shampoo conditioner and lotion. We could not have been happier. You will be very happy staying here!

Great home but not worth the trouble
We stayed at this property prior with friends with no problems. We recently rented this property and invited friends and it was the opposite. One of the neighbors threw a huge birthday party one night (which they were nice enough to inform us about prior) and the next morning I woke up to a text from the property manager telling us that parties at this property are not allowed and that the neighbors were complaining about how loud OUR party was last night. She included a picture of mine and my guests four cars that were parked on the property by a surveillance camera. I made the property manager aware of the party that took place next door and she seemed to brush it off saying she’s familiar with them and proceeded to harp on the fact that I had four vehicles on the property. I felt it inappropriate to to interrogate your guests about their vacation two days into it and brush off the actual party that was happening next door until we’ll past 4am. On our last night there, the studio bathroom backed up into the shower and bathroom floor. We tried to plunge it with no success. My husband (who is a licensed plumbing contractor) tried to clear the clog and find the clean out also with no success. As soon as we checked out and got to the main road for cell phone reception, I called the concierge to make her aware of the issue. A few days later I get a nasty email from the property manager about the amount of trash we had and the hot tub, etc. Again she concluded that we had a “party” on the property. I didn’t realize that my vacation would have a trash limit 🤷🏽‍♀️ This property has a great set up and it is a beautiful place to vacation. This last experience was definitely not worth the trouble we went through. The hassle of explaining yourself and your actions to someone who is supposed to be making your vacation easier and not harder was not worth the convenience and amenities they offer.

Aloha Jana, I apologize that you felt our handling of the situation was antagonistic. We have a duty to the owner of the property to maintain the rules which include 'no parties' as defined by no more than 6 guests and 2 vehicles. The Rental Agreement makes this clear and it's our job to enforce this and follow up on damages. Aloha, Jess and The Salt Water Crew

Clean, Beautiful and Peaceful home
Very satisfied with everything about this property. We loved the ocean sounds and were able to spot whales twice and dolphins once. Both the housekeeper and pool service people were so very nice and efficient. Mahalo much appreciated.

Relaxing getaway with an amazing view
All of our previous stays on the Big Island have been on the Kona side, so we were not sure how it would be on the rainy side. We did get some rain, but not so much to ruin our vacation. We loved the lush green trees and flowers. The view from the property was spell-binding and we enjoyed watching our own personal whale pod rolling and spouting right in front of us. We appreciated that everything was labeled and easy to find. One thing that would have made it even better would be padded cushions for the lounge chairs. Those wicker chairs got pretty hot without them! And we are used to a king bed, so sleeping in a queen was not as comfy as we would have liked. Otherwise we loved our stay—the breeze, the refreshing pool, and the sound of the waves on the lava rocks were hard to leave.

Hilo Shangri La great place to stay
We loved staying here. The hot tub and ‘slightly heated’ pool made all the difference! Some nights were cool enough that an unheated pool would’ve been too cool! The view was the best and we were able to watch the turtles down below everyday.

Great vacation home
This house was better than advertised! Location right on the ocean was perfect-quiet and peaceful. I would definitely stay here again.
