Great home! Pros and cons listed in review.
I wanted to give my honest opinion about this rental home, so the next set of renters may be able to benefit from it. Keep in mind that with any rental, there’s always pros and cons. I have listed my pros and cons below. Pros: - The Location is amazing! Steps from the beach with beach access that is attached underneath the deck. - nicely decorated and comfortable. - kitchen has everything you need - The owner is really nice to work with. - located close to downtown Duck - Hot tub 😍 Areas of improvement: - Ants. Just like with any home on the island that is close to the beach, you will be dealing with ants. Do not leave one speck of food out on the counter or else you will have ants within 15 minutes. Ant spray was left for us, and that helped a bit. - There were no usable beach chairs and umbrellas for us, so we had to purchase our own at the local Wings. We graciously left our beach chairs and umbrellas for the next set of renters to utilize. Just before warned, that you may need to either bring your own beach chairs if those get ruined, or go out purchase your own. - The upstairs shower curtain had mold growing on it so it does need to be replaced eventually. - The downstairs mattresses are not the most comfortable. We found that the upstairs bed was the only comfortable mattress there was. - The Deck furniture is old and broken. I would recommend the owner upgrading to newer composite furniture. Would definitely rent this again based on location. 😊😊

Great Location
House is great although it could have used a better cleaning. Screen doors will not stay in place, they fall out when opening. Terrible problem with ants in kitchen and downstairs table and bedroom. You cannot place food on counters. Actually found a couple ants in my car when I got home. I would definitely stay there again but the house just needs some work.

Awesome beachfront location
Old Bay Hideaway is right on the beach, offering unobstructed views of the Atlantic. We lucked out that few homes were occupied so early in the season. The home is older and showing its age in some places; it could definitely use some TLC. We had an unexpected issue arise on the fourth day of our stay. The owner was responsive to my call but was unable to remedy the problem quickly, so we chose to vacate and relocate to another rental. I received a refund for the balance of my reservation which was very much appreciated.

Perfect Valentine
February 14th is the Love Holiday, but the 15th is our wedding anniversary, so a perfect week of Love was our plan! The weather cooperated, no rain, and the rental,property was perfect for us and our two dogs. Everything was as described and the updates were appreciated. Being directly on the beach we enjoyed the beautiful sunrises, sunsets, and dinner dates! The beach was stunning, even to the point of finding a half dozen perfect sand dollars. Yes- even for a February getaway, this place was perfect. Thank you!

Family Trip
My family traveled to the Outer Banks for New Year’s weekend. The house was perfect for the six of us. We had beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The hot tub on the deck was a great spot to relax and look at the beach during day and the stars at night. On cold days, we could sit inside in the comfortable living room and see the ocean. We had a question when we were checking in and the owner responded immediately. We have stayed at numerous house and developments in the Outer Banks over many years. We would highly recommend Old Bay Hideaway!

Perfect location!
You really can't do better than the Old Bay Hideaway if you want to be in a quiet neighborhood and just steps away from the ocean. We loved being right on the beach! Easy to come and go multiple times throughout the day, and given the quiet neighborhood and the position of the house at the end of a cul-de-sac it felt like we had the beach all to ourselves. The deck on the top floor was the perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee and watch the sunrise over the ocean. The brand new hot tub was the perfect way to relax at the end of the day and watch the stars. You can even see the Milky Way! The main living areas of the house were well-appointed and comfortable. The bedrooms were suitable for our needs (although a king-size bed would be a nice addition to the main bedroom upstairs). A few negatives -- the kitchen had ants. This is to be expected when you're basically living on top of a sand dune, and I don't think I've ever stayed at an OBX house that didn't have ants. We were able to somewhat keep them at bay with ant spray, but it was a minor annoyance. There is the normal wear and tear that you should expect from an older beach house that has been exposed to the elements for many years. Under the house is a graveyard of broken beach chairs and busted boogie boards, so plan to bring your own beach gear or rent some in town. These are minor issues, though, that are quickly forgotten when you lay your eyes on the ocean and your feet in the sand. We hope to return again!

Old Bay Hideaway is in a fantastic location, right on the beach in a quiet cul-de-sac and neighborhood. It's a great spot for a family vacation. However, the house was filthy. In the description of the house, the owner says that all high touch areas are wiped and sanitized. Nothing in this house had been cleaned. We had to clean the kitchen, including all the counters, refrigerator, pots and pans and utensils. The bathrooms were also dirty and the downstairs bathtub needs to be caulked. The plumbing was very slow to drain so when you took a shower, the water pooled in the tub and didn't drain. We ended up showering in the outside shower, which had a nice bird's nest with an old bottle of shower gel. The dryer vent is also next to the shower so there is ample lint all over the wall next to the shower. There were several pots in the kitchen that had old food scraps in them plus the non-stick pans were so badly scratched we couldn't use them. The air returns were covered in dust and the filters had not been changed in quite some time. There was a fan in the master bedroom that was also caked in dust and grime. We have over 30 pictures of the substandard and unacceptable filth we encountered and will gladly share them with VRBO. This is our first experience with VRBO and will most likely be our last, if this is the type of property they allow to be rented.

Property Not Secure
The property was under renovation at the time of our rental (as was the property next door), which was during the off-season, so take all of this with a grain of salt (hopefully, the owner/manager intends to do more work before the next rental). Bottom Line: The biggest issue by far was that the property was not secure. I don't think a single outside door locked properly. The sliding glass door to our bedroom did not even have a secure handle!-- it fell off when I tried touching it. We hid our belongings before leaving or locked them in our vehicle. It was a little unsetting, to say the least. Little Stuff: Wiring was hanging from the ceiling in the kitchen. A storm door on the main entrance was propped up with a paint can with the new storm door leaning up against the house. The hot tub had chlorine levels that were unsafe for humans. There was a whole dustbunny farm under the upstairs bed. And the upstairs dresser drawers made my clothes smell moldy. Despite the above complaints, I would rent this house again because it was literally on the beach and the hot tub was great once we got the chemicals corrected, but I would make sure that all of the doors and locks were in order first! And bring your own spa chemicals b/c there was nothing on site when we arrived (we left the testing strips we bought for the next renters). Good luck!

Incredible view
I’ve stayed in this cozy and peaceful cottage for a little getaway. The view is incredible. Home is perfectly located, close to the restaurants, grocery stores and entertainment! Amazing spot for sunrise and sunset enjoyment. A lot of natural light and spacious living area makes you feel like home. Long walks on the beach or warm evening in a hot top, this cottage has it all! Mark went above and beyond to make sure I have everything I needed to enjoy my stay, fast response and great communication, incredibly accommodating. Definitely coming back!!!

There are not three queen beds—VRBO counts a pull-out couch in a common area as a bed. The whole house, particularly the upstairs bedroom, smelled like mildew. No one even bothered to hide a bucket of mold cleaner. The carpet is covered with stains and black marks.

The home is in a great location but I was under the impression that updates were going to be made for 2021 season. Upper level was fine but lower level has an unpleasant odor. Outdoor shower could only be used for rinse off as not enough pressure for a proper shower.

Great location, devils in the details
Great Location. Allowed 80 YO to enjoy the oceanfront view and access the beach with minimal issues. House has a great layout for a family of 5 (plus grandparents) to not be on top of each other. But...#1 I had to check if my tetanus shot was up to date. The top deck has several nail heads not flush with the surface. I would not feel comfortable letting a little child out there. And as others have noted the chairs need to be higher to really see the beach. Now #2, there was no can opener. I repeat no can opener. The cooking utensils are below minimal. Adequate pots, pans, dishes, silverware - but not much beyond that. The pictures shown are legit, including the 1990's stereo. There are a few very low and rusty beach chairs and sand toys, the boogie boards have been well loved.

Beach hut
House was good for what we needed it for. Close to the beach, with easy access. WiFi, didn’t work. Had to play around with the lights to get them to turn on in most rooms. Completely outdated. If you’re looking for a place to rest your head and cook it’s fine. But if you’re looking for a lavish beach home, this is not for you. Overall it worked for what we needed it for.
