First off, I want to say that my family and I have spent at least one summer weekend + in Matagorda at the beach for the last 13 years, so we’re used to the environment and the usual bugs (like mosquitos and ants). I also appreciate that Matagorda beach was near the epicenter of Hurricane Beryl, so I checked to make sure that the property was okay before we got there. The manager said it was in good order.
Our problems started shortly after we arrived to stay for the weekend. We noticed a can of bug spray on top of the fridge, but the place seemed fairly clean. However, we noticed a couple of roaches in the kitchen and killed them, but the problem was worse than we thought. My wife and I went to bed and righte before we were going to turn the light off, we noticed a German cockroach on our head board. I killed it and we went to sleep. Around 3 am, I awoke to the feel of something crawling on my legs. 2 small cockroaches were crawling on me. I noticed that my wife went to the bed in the living room, as she had found 2 more on her side.
After maybe 2 more hours of restless sleep, our daughter said that she had been bitten by something in the night and we decided that we could not stay a second night.
When I informed the property manager of this, and asked him to refund us the second night, he asked for photos as proof (luckily I took those and several videos). In short, check to make sure that the place is clean before booking it.
