Blew away expectations
The perfect location on the most lovely remote island in Maine. If you are up for a fun adventure exploring the best of Maine, matinicus is a must stop and you can’t be closer to the ocean or the beach than Kohls cottage. Perfect for a large family with children. The owners were clear on expectations and helpful with information. The island is a working island with nothing but a bakery, post office and church but proper planning and a good awareness and respect for local life will give you a wonderful visit to a very special place. It was everything our family hoped for and much much more!

Beautiful, rustic, peaceful
We had a wonderful time at the beach house. It was a quiet getaway with the most breathtaking scenery. Everyone we encountered on the island was friendly and welcoming. Beds were comfy! Kitchen is fully functional! I loved the outdoor shower, even in 50 degree weather!

Kohls Cottage
This cottage is the perfect spot to take 4 adults, 4 kids, the dog, the STUFF and while away a beautiful Maine summer day.. or 6. It is comfortable without being fussy, close to the beach.. and you cannot beat the view! We had a fabulous week!

This spot is more about location than the home itself, it’s one step above camping, but you can’t beat the view or location, friendly helpful service from the owners, bring everything you need even the little things, as it may not be in the home, be prepared! The location is amazing we loved our stay and hope to return

Blissful solitude. A wonderful choice for those who want to get away and leave the crowds behind.
Kohl's Beach Cottage is fantastic. It was exactly what we were looking for after the chaos of the pandemic over the last two years - remote, simple, and relaxing. The cottage itself brought me back to my childhood when my parents would rent beach houses away from the crowds. It is cozy and clean, and had everything we needed. The location and views are spectacular, communication with the owner was easy, and the residents of Matinicus are very kind and friendly. This will become our new annual vacation spot going forward.

Away from it all
Can't really separate the island from the cabin; there's a synergy that makes a very special place for people looking for well off the beaten path. This is not the place for luxury accommodations, designer shopping, and vibrant nightlife, but if you're looking here you already know that. It's a place to go and let all that mainland crazy -- news, politics, celebrity antics, etc. etc. etc. slip away into the triviality that it really is but hard to remember that when in the middle of it all. Out on the island on its few unpaved roads, the roadside honorbox eggs and baked goods and the lobsters delivered to the door, where the big social event is Friday at 3 when the recycling opens, yeah ... perspective. Quiet walks, wild raspberries and currants (strawberries and blackberries in other seasons), looking out the spectacular picture windows on a stormy day -- all good. We were only there a week and felt like familiar faces by the time we left. The cabin is really nice, a half-step up from rustic. Great big open main room lined with picture windows at water's edge. 2 minute walk from one of the island's two main sandy beaches. Really can't beat the location or the views. What you'll find there depends on what the people before you used and left. We found a lot of basics there -- lots of some things, not so much of others. We used some stuff. left some stuff for the next people. So if you forget something you'll probably be OK, but you can't count on anything. Everything worked, everything was clean, nothing was luxurious (although I did take advantage of the outdoor shower, which is piped for hot water, and that's pretty nice after a morning run and a dip in the ocean -- brrr). We loved it -- 4 adult family members (including an 85-year-old -- fully abled -- like lots of other things, ADA compliance is left on the mainland). We read a lot, walked a lot (doesn't take much to cover the island), checked in at the Island bakery every other day, went to the Fair Weather Market in the churchyard, and ate lobsters, and that pretty much covered the island action. Perfect. We left a week ago, and I'm missing it.

Always a treat!
Had a wonderful week on Matinicus! The house was clean and tidy when we arrived and the views are unbeatable. We spent our days combing the beach (which is literally just a few steps away), climbing the rocks, looking through the binoculars (we saw a porpoise and a seal) and enjoying the slow pace of life. I even was able to read my favorite book between walks and dips in the ocean. Always love staying here and will be back :)

Matinicus might just be heaven on earth. Kohl’s cottage is rustic but comfortable and exactly what you’d expect from a ME camp. Our week was perfect. So Much so that we’ve already booked our return!

Great week on Matinicus. Geoff was excellent with information and helping to get things arranged on the island for us. House is located in a great location, views for days. Can’t say enough about the beauty of the island, the hospitality of the people we met and just how nice it was to hit the pause button for a week. Thanks, Geoff! Hope to be back.
