The views from the cabin are amazing. The cabin itself is amazing. However, I wish I’d known just how remote and difficult it was to get to the cabin. Technically the cabin is only 12 miles from town. However, due to the road conditions (both the “short” way and the long way) it took about 45 minutes to get to a small town and much longer to get to fun activities like rafting and Colorado Springs etc. Had we known this, we would have opted for something actually closer to town. In addition, some reviews mention that the “short” way to canon city can be scary. I don’t think that accurately depicts how terrifying that “shorter” road is. It is literally on the side of a mountain with no trees or anything between you and 1,000 feet to your death. The 15 minutes saved by going this shorter way is not worth the agony of taking the road. My family and I were literally terrified and the journey on that road seemed to last hours. This may not bother some. But for anyone even a little concerned about a narrow dirt road that winds around a mountain with no guard rail, shoulder or trees, you don’t want to take this road. You also need to know that this cabin is literally in the middle of nowhere.
As far as the cabin itself, again it is beautiful. But this particularl rental has more “rules” than any other we’ve ever experienced. There were notes all over the place about what we weren’t allowed to do. For example, even though there is a fireplace inside and a fire pit outside, both stocked with wood, we weren’t allowed to have a fire (there was not a drought) it rained every day. Also, there were no hand towels in the bathrooms so we had to use wash rags.
Another big problem was the air conditioner. It didn’t seem to cool the house at all. We all struggled to sleep because we were so hot at night. This was true regardless of us turning the AC down. All these things together caused a lot of frustration. If we had known all these things we would have chosen another place.
