We just returned from a week at Villa Margi. The location of this incredible villa is ideal. It is close enough to many tourist destinations, like Pompeii, Sorento, Amalfi, Capri, etc. But it is also in an incredibly serene, picturesque town, allowing for privacy and quiet. The best of all worlds. My husband and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary by renting Villa Margi and inviting 9 other friends and family. About half way through the trip, one of my adult sons said, "This is the coolest thing we have ever done." He was not wrong.
First, a shout out to the host, Margi herself. From my first contact with Maria, who answered all our initial questions and gave us great advice about how to get to Villa Margi, we felt that we had an ally and guide in Margi. She greeted us upon arrival, and gave us a tour of her amazing villa. Margi brought us delicious (still warm!) pastries the next morning, and spent time with a map in front of us, writing down all the highlights (like where to get groceries, the best cheeses and wine, the best pizza). When she was headed into Vico, she offered us a lift. But one of the main highlights was the meal she cooked for us one night. Incredible. One of us is a professional chef, and he raved about the meatballs. Every course was awesome, and the profiteroles and raspberries for dessert were divine. Margi is a gem.
The villa sits on a cliff overlooking the water. The views are spectacular, and the vivid sunsets were stunning. The rooms are just as described. Everything was clean and neat. There are places for all to gather, but if you need alone time, that is easily accomplished. As we cooked in a lot (the chef gave the youngest among us some great tutorials), we might have wished for a larger kitchen, but it was well-appointed with everything we needed to make a wide variety of meals. Drinking espresso on the balcony was a treat.
The walk into Vico Equense by the main road was totally doable, though the sidewalks were narrow. It took us about 30 minutes. The hill up to the villa was steep, but us sixty-somethings handled it just fine. Margi showed us a trail into town off the beaten path, and that was a walk not to miss - the views were marvelous. Vico is a charming little town, and the people were lovely and helpful.
Finally, kudos to Allessandro (Taxi Alex) who was much more than a driver - another invaluable resource for everything local. If you don't have a car, you need him.
