This Caribou Island cabin was perfect for an end of summer getaway for my kids (13 and 11) and me. The highlight for us was the location--nestled in the trees right on the lake, but completely private. I can't say enough about how beautiful the property is. The bedrock protrudes through a thin cover of soil and is covered with a variety of lichen and moss that is absolutely gorgeous. Wintergreen covers much of the property too, which we used to make delicious tea to warm us after fishing in the rain. And it was wonderfully quiet while we were there, aside from a very few powered boats and the frequent cries of the loons.
We brought a kayak to get onto the island, and the hosts provided very nice kayaks as well, which we used extensively. We spent lots of time on the water, exploring diving board rock, the eagle nest on the back side of the island, and fishing. The fishing was superb--lots of white perch to catch if you have kids, and numerous hungry smallmouth bass that we at times were catching on every cast of our lures.
Regarding the dock and the lake--the water off the end of the dock is deep, and the bottom is rocky, both enormous pluses as you can jump off the dock and not end up with your feet in the muck. And the dock area is completely visibly from the large windows in the cabin, so it's easy to keep an eye on kids while cooking/cleaning.
We saw moose, eagles, loons, ducks and lots of other wildlife. You will not be disappointed if you stay here!
