I rode my bike up a mountain path behind the Forestry College. Near the top, there was this little hut that I guess some of the students stay at. Behind the hut, there are some yak, reindeer and other assorted wild game. Not sure what it was all about, but a nice peaceful place only about 20-30 minutes from my post modernist habitation in Kunming

It is the little things in life that matter Yesterday, I noticed many people burning paper piles along the street. I know that this kind of paper is called Joss Paper(maybe jinzhi - 金纸) and that it is usually burnt for offering to the dead. I will ask my students and try to get a better answer later, but in any event, it is a tradition that is displayed without much pomp and circumstances and speaks to Chinese culture. Do your thing and move on...very cool.

On a Sunday afternoon when the teeming millions in Kunming are fighting for parking spots and a table for lunch, a mere 10 minutes up the mountain, I find a scene straight out of Dickens. What exactly this place's intended function was is uncertain to me. I am sure it was an important part in Kunming's economic system. It probably took materials from the ground and made shiny strong blocks which built buildings much like itself that is now turning into the same materials it started with. What a sometimes strange world we live in.

Personally, I would hate it and don't ascribe to its practice. However, as an observer of political economy and nation states, I must admit that it is of incredible benefit. China has a vibrance to it and it owes this in part to the level of discipline that exists throughout its society. On the contrary, in the US, there is a malaise that runs deep within its core. It is rotting from the inside out. Everywhere, you here the cry of how great America is, an affirmation without any discipline. It is a profound self-delusion and it is about to bite us all squarely on the ass.

En general todo muy bien, no es lujoso, pero cumple perfecto para un cómodo hospedaje en un viaje de negocios. Lo único malo es que el aire acondicionado no me funcionó correctamente y el internet es realmente limitado, la señal en extremo débil.
